Wedding Jargon - Demystified

Wedding Jargon - Demystified

In case you didn’t know - weddings can be confusing.

I don’t mean your actual wedding day.

That was one of the easiest days of my life. All I had to do was make it down the aisle and get out the words “I do”. Then came the open bar, and I was set for the rest of the day.

It’s everything that leads up to the wedding that can be confusing.

For instance, you’re about to learn a bunch of new words for things you didn’t even know existed.

It’s inevitable.

Because I know there’s a big learning curve, I’ve gone ahead and put together a small list of the words that tripped me up in the beginning, so you can get ahead in the game. Maybe you’ll even impress your bride-to-be with your impressive wedding vocabulary.

"Save-the-dates"

You may have already heard of these before. But if not, let me break it down.

It used to be that when a guy met a gal, they would get engaged, they would eventually announce the day they would get married, people would show up.

Simple.

Well, nowadays, we’re all so busy, we’ve decided to complicate it even more with an extra step. Everyone is so busy, off getting married, having kids, going on vacations etc., that now we have to send out these things calledsave-the-dates.

Which, in simplest terms, are a pre-wedding invitation.

It’s basically “dibs” for claiming that coveted Saturday in June. Back off family reunion, my save-the-date beat your Facebook invite.

You’ll still have to shell out for “real” wedding invitations so be prepared.

If it helps, think of your save-the-date as a really cool movie preview…

Coming This Fall – Our Wedding

"Tulle"

I want to take a second and introduce you to this magically versatile fabric called tulle.

You’ve probably encountered it many times before and didn’t even know it.

In simplest terms, tulle is a pretty netting-type fabric that to the untrained male eye, can sometimes look like lace.

It’s not…

Tulle is incredibly versatile, and can be used for everything from wedding dresses to table decorations.

To make it even more confusing, there are actually even more variations of this fabric. And each one has its own name.

But we’re not going to worry about that today. If you just start calling everything ‘tulle’ people will probably be so impressed that they won’t even care that it’s technically chiffon, or whatever.

"Fondant"

This may be the first one that you will actually care about.

Icing.

You know, that stuff that goes on a cake.

I know, I know, why not just call it icing?

Because this isn’t regular icing, this is “fancy” icing. And it’s all the rage these days.

Fondant is special because it’s literally flattened out and laid over the cake like a blanket.

A sweet, delicious blanket with the flavor of your choosing.

Because it’s flattened and laid over the cake, rather than spread with a knife, this is the smoothest type of icing that you can use.

This smooth clean covering not only looks pretty, but also makes a great base for all those fancy cake decorations you’ve seen.

"Charger"

Finally, something straightforward.

A charger is a special device used to provide power for wedding day electronics.

Just kidding, this is a wedding remember? There’s no way it could actually be that easy.

But, lucky for us, this may be the simplest explanation of them all.

As a matter of fact, you’ve probably seen a charger before and not even known it. Especially if you’ve ever been to one of those super fancy restaurants (or if you have that one aunt that likes fancy things).

A charger is just a fancy plate that you never eat of off.

It rests below the other plates and bowls and looks very pretty. Like a placemat, except it’s a plate.

So, a “placeplate”, or maybe it’s “platemat”?

Wedding Dress "Styles"

To be honest, there's not enough time in the world to cover this, but I wanted to at least give you a heads up.

FYI, there’s more than one type of wedding dress style.

Yes, I know your mind is probably blown, and you definitely should take a moment (or an hour) and Google it.

That way you can impress your fiancée by asking her about the wedding dress styles that she’s considering.

Hopefully you’ve found this information helpful.

If you happen to have any questions along the, feel free to reach out!

And I will draw from the vast wealth of my wedding knowledge to help you. (aka ask my wife)

Cheers!

Mark.
